Higher education in India is passing through a period of profound transformation, whether in terms of the place of the university in the life of the community or vis-à-vis the government or in terms of the networking between the university and its constituents.

While higher education has made considerable strides in the country, each of its main objectives remain to be accomplished. Education was to be the medium through which equality of opportunity was to be made concrete yet it remains an endlessly deferred dream for many.

Investment in education was meant to be a path of greater productivity and growth, yet its potential contribution to economy remains unrealised.

Education was to be an aspiration for better experience of excellence in all fields. It was hoped that these aspirations would be linked together by founding of a just, productive and cultured society.

There is a chasm here between what the educational systems is expected to achieve and what it is in fact accomplishing.

New initiatives are needed if it is to accomplish its objectives. We believe that the proposed society will achieve these goals.
